Senator Herb Kohl
During his three terms in the United States Senate, Herb Kohl has never forgotten where he comes from. Born and raised in Milwaukee, where he attended public school, Senator Kohl is truly Wisconsin. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and after receiving his master’s degree in business administration from Harvard, he returned to Milwaukee to join his father and brothers in building the family business, Kohl’s grocery and department stores. Senator Kohl became president of Kohl’s in 1970 and continued to run the stores like a family business, where everyone felt they had a stake in its success. In fact, as president, Senator Kohl traveled throughout Wisconsin and spent as much time as possible in the stores, talking with customers and employees. In the process, he learned an important lesson: the best ideas often came from the people who worked and shopped there. Even now, 20 years after the family sold the stores, Senator Kohl is often approached by former employees who appreciated his ability to make the stores feel like one big family. In 1985, when it looked like the Milwaukee Bucks might leave Wisconsin, he purchased the team with a promise to keep them where they belong - in Milwaukee, representing the state of Wisconsin. It wasn’t the smartest business decision he’s ever made, but Senator Kohl has never regretted this investment in Wisconsin and our people. The people of Wisconsin first elected Herb Kohl their Senator in 1988. Since then, they have twice confirmed their support for his work with reelection. During his time in office, Senator Kohl has put forth a legislative agenda designed to strengthen America’s families - making health care more affordable, creating good-paying jobs, strengthening our schools, and protecting Social Security. Additionally, through his seat on the Appropriations Committee, Senator Kohl works hard to make sure that Wisconsin gets its fair share of federal funds. As he seeks his fourth term, Senator Kohl will carry on the fight for the issues that matter to you as he continues to be nobody’s Senator but yours. |
